Why and when does one use one or both of them?

A cat has claws at the end of its paws and a comma's a pause at the end of a clause. Oh, wait...

In my opinion, the purpose of a negotiation is both sides compromising and coming to a mutually beneficial solution. An argument is more often the result of people unwilling to understand or accept the position of the other, and therefore unwilling to come to any conclusion but their own.

I agree with the Captain.

There is another meaning of argument, which is a reason to do or believe something. So in a negotiation, you may argue why the outcome should be closer to what you want than what the other party wants.

But if you are using argue to mean something like bicker, the Captain nailed it.

An argument can also be an appeal to a third party such as an attorneys argument in court. Both sides argue one side without compromise (aside from stipulations) and a jury or judge decides who's argument to believe.
