I've been to Washington state a few times but never Spokane. We are south in SF Bay Area. Who in your family will be participating?

Spokane, Washington.  Starts downown, winds through old old part of town with lots of 'stately mansions,' then out into what used to be countryside (starting to be developed now), and back into town to close the loop.  This is the 40th running, and it is the second largest road race in the U.S.

Son #2, one niece, one nephew, and I will be running.  My brother and sister and son #1 used to run it, now they walk, along with more nephews, nieces and cousins.  All told, there can be thirty in our group; I'm not sure how many we will be this year.   My Mom walked it every year after, I think, Bloomsday #5 until three years ago - she will be 90 a few days after Bloomsday.

Yes, it is.  The Bloomsday Run web page has the history of the race, but makes no mention of why 12k.
