| Spunky is taking Search & Rescue training. That led to me wondering how many different things I have trained, studied for. So . . . Tell us about the various occupations, paid or volunteer, you have had. What have you studied trained for but for one reason or other never actually done? I'll start. 1) newspaper route 2) putting up hay, back in the day of square bales 3) swimming instructor, lifeguard (8 summers of that) 4) Ski Patrol (5 winters) 5) short-order cook (met my wife there ) 6) 7th-8th grade teacher (1 year, that was plenty!) 7) dentist My BA degree was History/Education/P.E. 7th/8th grade involves teaching everything! Post graduate work was in analytical chemistry, my back-up plan in case I didn't get into dental school. Have never worked as a chemist. Other training; machinist, carpentry, electrician, plumbing. All very useful, but have never been employed to do any of them. Okay, now it's your turn. | |

| My wife taught 7/8 grade science for a couple years, hardest job she ever had but she really liked working with those kids. Here's my list, chronological order, probably forgot a few: 1) caddy at local country club 2) groundskeeper at a cemetery - great job, had lots of people under me (badda-bing!) 3) dining hall staff in college 4) groundskeeper in college 5) set up rows of folding desks for final exams in college 6) Xerox copy machine operator 7) delivery person for Xerox copy shop (a car crash in Boston ended that one!) stuffed chair cushions in my uncle's furniture factory 9) lab technician in molecular biology lab 10) post-doc researcher in neuroscience lab 11) geneticist in government facility that manufactured anti-cancer drugs for clinical trials 12) genetics R&D in biotech company 13) business development in biotech company 14) VP R&D in biotech company 15) instructor in pharmaceutical business for a university distance-education course 16) developed a computerized exhibit for local historic society (volunteer) 17) president of local watershed association 18) member of township land preservation board

| Not too varied or exciting. I've only had 3 employers my entire career life but within each job there was growing tasks and responsibilities which kept thing challenging and interesting. 1. Paperboy 13-16 years old 3 huge routes 2 morning and one afternoon. Sunday mornings were ridiculous. Start folding at 4am and throw until noon somedays but I made good money for someone in their early teens. 2. Bike shop mechanic/sales and later manager 16-30 years old. 3. Union carpenter apprentice/journeyman/lead carpenter/foreman/assistant superintendent/superintendent/senior superintendent. 30-51 years old. 4. Retired 51. Looking forward to traveling in our truck camper around the US starting 2017. | |

Wow, that is an early retirement! What pays the bills? We didn't have kids or any college loan debt so we were able to save quite a bit and invest over the years. Both of us have been working more or less full time since we met at 16. I also had an inheritance that allowed us to retire 2-3 years earlier than we anticipated.

| Timekeeper.
Government job. posted time and attendance for 50 employees of the social work department. I did what that list doesn't show is that number 7, 8, 9 and 10 have all been with the same governmental agency. I have worked there for 34 years. One more to go.
BIS, Your travel plans in the truck camper sound great. I have been researching small trailers and also videos of camping out of vehicles. We plan to expand our road trips starting next summer. I have several National Parks I hope to visit each of the next several years. I plan to retire in June, 2017. DH has been retired for 6 years. I have been spoiled ever since he took his early out.
